Supporting Literacy Leaders in a High-achieving, Evolving Society
The process of learning and
growing never stops. Just as technology evolves, the notion of what it means to
be considered “literate” is also changing. Students are expected to not only
acquire the tools needed to comprehend a lesson but also how to find answers
and resources for the future. It is my goal to prepare and strengthen students’
technological, social, and conceptual understanding of the world around them.
Students practice authentic, problem-solving techniques that demand
perseverance and utilization of different resources in order to help shape
successful, high-achieving leaders for the future.
I also believe that students should have a clear and explicit understanding of what it takes to be considered "successful" in the classroom. Here is a list of just a few of the life skills my students learn...
- How to effectively check for understanding while reading by summarizing the main points in the form of "Breaking News Headlines" in Social Studies
-How to plan, organize, and write extended response essays in shorter amount of time through "Race the Clock" essay practice
-How to collaborate with others, contemplate different mathematical strategies, and arrive at a final solution during "Mathematical Battleship!"
-How to visualize and accurately describe scientific concepts , like describing the path of electrical current around a circuit, through personal connections and dramatic storytelling/narration
-How to edit one's own work and provide professional critique and meaningful feedback through "Partner Review and Conferencing" and Google Drive commentary
-How to follow and check a list of criteria to include all necessary parts of an assignment/project
Here is an example of effective integration of technological skills to showcase content and literacy.
